THIS REMARKABLE HOME Is positioned in a secluded elevated location between Cowes and Gurnard at the end of a quiet no- through road. 'Bru na Mara', (Gaelic for 'sanctuary by the sea'), is a unique contemporary coastal home that was designed and built by the current owners to maximise the exceptional western Solent views.
In our experience, it is rare to find a home in such close proximity to Cowes and yet not see another house from its seaward facing aspect. Few places could offer a more spectacular setting where as many hours are spent looking out at wild winter storms as they are watching the sailing and sunsets.
Some striking features of this enviable home are that the generously proportioned rooms enjoy seclusion and most have completely uninterrupted views of the sea. The 'living quarters' on the ground floor have glazed sliding doors opening onto a continuous 'Opepe' hardwood terrace that leads to the garden.
Bru na Mara reaches its pinnacle in the open plan living space occupying the entire first floor which is central to the home. The visual impact of the stunning vista is revealed while ascending the stairs and is accentuated by the high ceiling and tall glazing. Skylights over the kitchen area and stairwell further combine in flooding light into this bright and stunning atrium. A sliding door opens on to an elevated terrace from which a spiral staircase leads back down to the lower deck and landscaped garden.
OUTSIDE AREAS The coastal themed garden has been beautifully designed utilizing railway sleepers to terrace the pebble paths, flower beds and lawn. Various types of palms, succulents, bamboos and coastal grasses give a distinctive Mediterranean feel. Dusk activates subtle feature lighting illuminating much of the front and rear planting. The wrap around terrace, accessed from the ground floor bedrooms, leads to a semi recessed spa set back on one of the decks.
Bru na mara is approached by a driveway with an automatic sliding gate opening into a courtyard style area where there is parking for several cars, a garage, bike store and space for a boat.
Adjacent to the house is a woodland path that leads directly onto the esplanade from where you can stroll into the sailing town of Cowes or to Gurnard village and local beaches.
LOCAL AREA Cowes, which can be reached on foot in 10/15 minutes or 2 minutes by car, is a well known historic town, a popular destination for many visitors and locals. Offering good local restaurants and pubs, it also has many yacht clubs and a marina. For connections to the mainland there is a foot passenger service that can take you to Southampton in 25 minutes for rail connections to London, and a regular car ferry service from East Cowes to Southampton. Gurnard is also a lovely coastal village and in walking distance where you can enjoy local pubs, a great restaurant the Little Gloster and the coastal walk to Thorness Bay. The busy village Sailing Club is also a great community asset.
